Hi-ho,
I can't say that I know a great deal about howards. I have worked on a few, but they were getting old when i started working on machines, so i didn't see all that many.
I do know that it is the pins in the gearbox that eventually kills them off. they just are not available anymore. As for the gearbox, I'm sure that it should have oil in it, and it will no doubt be something like an ordinary gearbox oil, however i expect one of my playmates in this section will tell you the recomended rating.
Sorry I cant be more help, merry tiller/ briggs and stratton/ honda are more my line of work

This is the pin that is attached to a sort of cam which in turn is fixed to a thin steel plate which bolts to the outer gearbox casing. Attached to this steel plate is what I can best decribe as a gear selector lever (to select the two forward gears and reverse) Its obvious that this ain't the original pin cos its been welded on and looks awful and cos its been welded this has made it soft and non durable. Thanks for the offer, but I've got a manual. What I need is a case-hardened pin with a rounded edge, bit like a bullet head.m
