grow tight ball varirties,or grow some sprouts and treat each sprout as a cabbage if you really want them small.

What variety did you use? Planting too close together can be a cause of a failure to heart up.

Derby Day is a quick grower and produces small hearts (unless you leave it too long!!!

go online and order what you need for your growing enviroment,maybe a stickie with the likes of dobbies and suttons would help.

Last year I grew Kilaxy which is a white 'Dutch' type cabbage.  The eventual size depends on how close you plant them.  I grew them really close together and  got small well hearted plants which held for months.  I am growing them again this year.

Minicole is a  lovely pale cabbage, for close planting, perfect for 2 people which I've grown  for the last 2 years

Try hispi for a pointed cabbage or primo for round ones. Space them 6 inches apart, take out every other one and use them as greens before they heart.

I think I will go with minicole.  With the first NEW high rise bed ready to go and the others to follow in a couple of weeks, I will be able to give them room for their root ball.  Thats if still time to germinate them and grow.

Last time I got johnsons world kitchen Cabbage Filderkraut!as it was pointed in the pic I assumed it was a hispi which I thought were all smallish.  I should have known because it said can grow to 10lbs, which as was pointed out on here seems rather large.  Anyway as I said it was a disaster, some of which would be my fault if not all LOL.  I grew them in a large trough as no where else to put them, so that wasn't good, not enough room for them.  They also seemed to grow a stalk underneath which was eventually about 8 innches high also not good they normally grow on stalks that big do they??

Looking around the net seems that variety Filderkraut is surprisingly huge

Hispi will give you cabbage double quick and they are small and sweet. Fabulous!

I like Minicole too but they will get big if you let them but you can grow them at close spacings to keep them smaller. They stand for ages which is where they score over the Hispi.  Mind you Hispi are so tasty you won't want to let them stand

Celtic f1 is nice and tight and works great in coleslaw, nice and crunchy. It is quite light in colour though. I haven't grown it but do get lots from a friend who does, actually I might try and grow some myself this year.

Always thought that reluctance to heart up on the part of cabbages (most lately Durham earlies) was often an indicator of the soil not being sufficiently firm (and indeed a factor in under-performance of all the brassicas)  If this is not the case I'll need to find another reason why different parts of my eden show such markedly different brassica results!  Any brassica experts able to shed a bit of light on this one please?
