an onion question
« on: July 02, 2014, 13:08 »
im growing my first onions and they are at the stage of being able to see the top of the onion I must say they look good and seem to be about the size of a tennis ball the greenery is bolt upright and a lush green all I need to know is when I can pull them and do I have to wait before I use them ?or should I wait a bit longer .

You can eat them whenever you like, they will still taste good.  ;)

If you want to store them you need to wait until the tops die back - the greener the foliage when harvested the harder they are to fully dry out, and rot usually starts in the neck if it's not done properly.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

You can start using them now, but if you leave them they'll get bigger. I alway throw in some Autumn planted onions for an early crop and leave the spring planted ones to dry fully ready for storage. At tennis ball size now, you're gonna have some whoppers :D

"They do say". . . that when pulled and laying on the ground drying prior to storage, if you point the roots at the sun this will increase the chances of your onions storing well.
