How much fertiliser to use?
« on: March 14, 2012, 13:58 »
Hi, hopefully I will be planting my onion sets and potatoes this weekend. How much onion/ potato fertiliser should I place with each item as I have no instructions on the box!

Hi, I've only just  got the allotment. Nothing has been grown on it for at least four years. It was bare earth when I got it. I've bought both fertilisers now so I might as well use them. I assume the ground must be pretty fertile anyway. I'm not sure how much to use, Ian

Me again!  :) As I was hoping to do them this weekend, would it be ok just to put a tiny teaspoonful underneath as I plant them ?

I put a very small handful of spud fertiliser under each spud.

Don't know onion fertiliser is OK directly under an onion plant though.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Providing it's not in direct contact with the spud it's not a problem. When I hole plant my spuds I 'scumble' a teaspoon's-worth of fertiliser into the bottom of the planting hole and let some of the soil from the side of the hole fall into the bottom and just drop the spud on top (which is how my Dad used to do it).

Usually I rake the fertiliser into the bottom of the planting trench (but thin I like digging trenches).

Hi, thanks for all your replies. I will place a bit under the potatoes and I will dig the onion fertiliser in this weekend and plant next weekend. Rain is forecast so all may change! :)

I think you should avoid creating high local concentrations of "neat" fertilisers, especially inorganic rather than organic types - it could burn the emerging roots which would also probably find it difficult to take up such a high concentration of nutrients; each potato will grow into a plant at least 1-2 feet across and all of it needs feeding.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I agree with JayG - well someone has to.

That's why I prefer to trench my spuds, rather than drop them in a hole with a bit of fertiliser.  The fertilser, (mostly horse poo in my case), is spread out along the bottom of the trench so that as the plant spreads itself, it's there for the uptake.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I agree with avoiding high concentrations of fertilizer near to plants/seeds.

Most instructions with fertilizer say either 4oz per square yard or 2 oz per square yard. It is a good idea to weigh out 4oz of fertilizer and put it in your hand. From then on you know what 4oz looks like and you never need to weigh or measure i.e. 4oz = big handfull, 2oz = small handfull.

I doubt if anyone has experienced a soil that won't grow anything. An allotment soil that has been dormant for 4 years should not need fertilizer at this time. I too trench potatoes with manure/compost and even put newspaper in the bottom to conserve moisture.
At the moment the ground is still cold and adding fertilizer now could be wasted. Let the plant grow first and it will tell you if it needs feeding.
I do add some fertilizer when hoeing up and when the onions are beginning to bulk.  I just follow the instructions.
ianl: I have just seen your post. Little and often is best practise.
