no! the other way up...down...up...down   can't see how it makes a difference after all it's just a cover, if i had to choose i'd have the darkest side up so as to contract as much heat as poss.

Sorry to disagee with anybody but the correct side depends on what type of carpet it is.

(A)If wool then then the pattern side down proper hessian backing up.

(B)If  pure nylon pattern side up.

(C)But if its cheapo thin stuff poly/mix then use two layers and put one pattern side up and the other pattern side down.Placing it on the compost like a sandwich, backing to backing.

Why..................because if its.
(A) If its good quality the backing will have the pattern right through the carpet and will resist the rain and cold better for longer.

(B) Then the backing will delamiate very quickly if left out in all weathers. The pattern side is the strongest and most resilent.

(C) cheapo carpet has a better backing( to hold it together )in most cases, but will very soon disintergrate.By putting it back to back you can slow this process down.

To tell the diff.Pluck some fibres place on a saucer and set fire to them(Take Care).
If its blackens and sets to a rock hard chemical smelling ball its got a lot of nylon in it.

If it does the same but crumbles when crushed then is a mix.

If it smells like a sheep hit by lightning then its got wool in it.
