A local garden center is selling seed potatoes now at a reasonable price,if I buy now what are my chances of chitting them without there being too much growth before planting in late March/april?

You are all right. They are sent nowish, quite often, if you order.

And I'm putting mine out on the ready. Nothing to worry. 8)

My local garden centre wll be getting their stock in in about 2 weeks and I intend hitting them as soon as! They have about 80 varieties to chose from.

Like gobs, (must stop agreeing  ) I don't consider it too early. Make sure they are in a cool, but frost free, light place. If it's too dark & gloomy, the chits will get leggy & drawn.

I pop them in egg carton bottoms, (4 sit nicely in a large seed tray), and they go in a greenhouse, with just sufficient heating to keep frost off. (It's not just for the spuds, I've got some cacti.).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Good,I will be off tommorow.I use empty modules to chit my tatties as they take up less room than egg boxes when you are collecting them.

My egg boxes take up next to no room, stacked in each other. I just use the bottoms.

What price are the spuds going for may I ask? - not that it's going to be economical to drive to Worcestershire!

They're getting used to it. I also hit them for onions/shallotts & pea seed!
