poor wilma
« on: April 14, 2011, 19:54 »
Hello, I wonder if anyone has any ideas or treatments for my Wilma. She has not been very well since last September but is still going. I treated her last year with cod liver oil and crushed garlic mixed in food or with a oral syringe after I noticed she was a bit doddery and her tail was down and it still is.  A lady said she might have had a stroke.  For the past few days she has had the white runs and her bottom was protruding, I washed her rear end in warm water each day. She is eating and drinking quite well but sits down a lot. She still lays and egg now and then.  I was looking on the internet and think it might be vent gleet. However today her bottom is not protruding and she laid an egg but still sits a lot.
Has anyone come across this if so do you have any tips.  Many thanks.

Hello Pammie and welcome to the wacky world of henaholics  :)
Like Jinty I can't really help but I'm sure you'll get some good advice.  I must admit I have never heard of vent gleet and must look it up for myself.  In the meatime good luck and keep us posted  :)

You don't say what breed or how old she is - this could help the experts on here to give you some ideas.

Vent gleet is a continuous white discharge rather than the runs and can be treated with an antibiotic solution, but it is not often successful. It's basically inflammation of the cloaca.
Has she been treated for worms? This can also cause white droppings as can Coccidosis or liver/kidney problems. If she is an elderly hen the latter may be your problem.
