Title: beetroots
Post by: jimbo1878 on June 30, 2011, 23:00
Am I too late to sow some beetroot? I have got some on the go already but only a few as it was a test to see if the plot would grow anything. It was lying unused for a good while before I took it on you see. was hoping to get some more in. I have a bed prepared approx 4 foot by 2 foot will this be big enough?

Thanks

Jimbo

Plant them now and keep them watered and they will germinate quickly in the warm soil. You will have nice young beet to eat in September.

It's actually a nice way to grow beetroot, in succession, and we've just put some seed down for late summer.

Last year they went on for ages, and eventually just got eaten - by us!

Its one of those Summer crops that we always sow successionally and like you Growster have just sown more. :)

When they are small, you can see the leaves sometimes in bags of salad bought at the supermarket.  The small leaves are sweet but big leaves are bitter.  Apparently, centuries ago, people just harvested the leaves and discarded the root - obviously there was a complete turn-around in that only the root was harvested - the baby leaves are now becoming popular again.  :)

I'm about to sow some Bolthardy variety of Beetroot which according to the packet can be sown till mid July and harvested till October.
Thanks for reminding me to get round to doing this.
Incidently has anyone made Beetroot wine with their beet's ? Only it's something I have thought about trying for some while now. Just wanted a few tips on how long to let them grow on for etc.

I was given a packet of Detroit seeds so I sowed these early on, but the flavour is not as good as Bolthardy. Another couple of weeks to wait for those.

Nothing to do with earthquake, just beetroot not common here. I tried to ask few suppliers, but result is the same - 0. And i don't think local authorities will allow to import any seeds

Can you buy beetroot with the leaves on, Vit? Perhaps you could plant some and let it go to seed? You could start up your own seed suppliers.

Sowed my beetroot today and also put in a patch of pak choi. Not sure if these will work but the packet said sow until july so thought why not.

Thank you, guys, but i don't think Japanese custom will allow to import any seeds, at moment i am trying to find'em locally. Just beetroot is not common here, say like goya or okura in europe i guess. Of cause, if i will get some seeds, i will do my own then. Anyway thank you.

I dont like beetroot. sowed lastyear. harvested leaves (big ones) for cooking.
They are not bitter. apparently they go bitter when they bolt and boltardy dont bolt apparently.
Wonderful if cooked like spinach and give the beetroot away to people  :)
