blackberry supports

hi
I have been offered a blackberry plant and I am planning on using thick, long fence posts with strong wire stretched between them but I was just wondering firstly how far apart the posts should be. Secondly how many posts will I need.
This is going to be a part barrier between our allotment and our neighbour, our allootment is 12 metres long.

They do grow very long canes. I have one in at the moment, planted last year. I have used the fence supports as it is growing against a fence at the moment and they are 5 foot apart, the spread of this when canes are spread both sides so far is about 18 feet and could have been longer but I clipped them when they got longer than the plot! It has got loads of flowers this year so hoping for a bumper crop in a couple of months time.

crowndale is right - they can grow to be quite large.

i have one in my fruit cage - but i am training it.

the new growth this year will bear the fruit for next year - and like most young shoots are soft and pliable. i have two large posts with 4 strands of wire - and i train my blackberry as i would a climbing rose - with clever pruning - it will only get as big as you allow it
