Spiders are good. They eat annoying things like midges etc.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

I know spiders cannot harm you - but I'm phobic about them too.. I face them bravely then RUN AWAY RUN AWAY :)

I didn't think red ants did any harm - I've quite a few on the plot and apart from when I kneeled in the nest, wearing shorts, no problem.

Ants in the pants is funnier said than suffered.

It was lucky I had  the shed so I could get at the problem without being arrested.

Whipping out one's equipment in public can get one talked about :)

We get red ants in our front border, but they don't seem to harm the few plants there are there, but I did fall foul of them last year when I was weeding, boy they were everywhere, some even managed to crawl up my back!!!  Luckily, i nipped behing the fence which is very private now, so no one could see the quick striptease!!!! lol  Not a pretty sight I can tell you!!!

Its surprising how much their nips hurt!!!!

The greenhouse I have is full of spiders... I'm rather phobic of them too but they do seem to do a good job of eating up the bugs and things so I leave them be! :)  (Now, if I could tempt them with a snail or two... ;))

Same as Phoenix I once read somewhere follow the ants to their nest and then pour boiling water down the hole. Although sounds a bit cruel. But if they are going to destroy everything i guess it's you or the ants

I don't know if red ants have similar behaviour to normal ants but it could be a sign of aphids. The ants eat a little bit of sugar from the aphids so they are friends. I don't mean to sound alarm bells unduely but I noticed ants on my blackcurrent bush in the garden the other day and on closer inspection found lots of eggs and a few aphids.  I sprayed with a chemical :( . I got a terrible crop in the first year and I want a good one this year. No excuses I suppose, I should have tried the soapy tea mixture.
