Moving a Peony
« on: September 21, 2019, 14:18 »
Hi all, not really moving it but re-planting it. They're about 4 years old and have never flowered. Every year I mean to lift them. I think they're planted too deep, every year I forget
Is now a good time to lift them and how deep would you recommend. Any particular feed I should put in the new hole. Should I cut all the foliage off or leave it?
Thanks

I'd wait for the foliage to die back before moving it tbh, plants recover better if they are moved while they are 'resting'.

I set reminders on my phone for things like that, cos I'm useless at remembering things  ::)

I've just remembered to re-plant my Peony. ::) I've dug them up and they have the shoots that are supposed to be next years flowering stems. I'm pretty sure these appear every year but it never flowers.
What should I do with them now?
There is a third one from which the tiny individual shoots were knocked off from, I'm wondering if I should just plant this part or the whole thing. If I plant the whole thing I'm really just starting from where I left off.

Confused.

I have had lumpy root fallen off,I just replanted it. Fairly shallow hole depth.

Even the bit you knocked a few shoots off should resprout.  It isn't usually over crowding that prevents peonies from flowering, it is being planted too deep.

I'd plant the whole bit on picture 3, but make sure the tuberous part of the root is just below the soil surface.  Peonies can be a bit diva-ish to get going, but if happy, they clump up and flower like crazy.  Mine get no special treatment.  Just a handful of pelleted chicken manure every so often, when I remember to chuck some over the flowery bits of garden at home  :)

Thanks, they've been replanted in the same position and at the same depth as before. The pink shoots are just poking through the soil surface. I can't really plant them any shallower without half the plant being above the surface.
I'm not holding my breath though.

If concerned you can cover with a bit of soil.
