Ignore them Babe, the composter is a brill Idea, which you can use for compost later. And it's not expensive, you just get on with it, with common sense, don't take every remark on board, you end up in an institution.

If you cut in 2 you have no lid for the bottom half and no door for the top half. So its no use as a compost bin at a later date. if you use the 330 ltr bin thats a lot of compost. even  cut in 2. old compost bags work fine for me. you can fill 2 bags[roll tops down half way and add compost as the tops grow] from one 75ltr bag.    Yorkshire economics.

Like neal, I use bags since you can roll down the top to keep the haulm strong and green.  In my case, recycled 150 litre forestry bags.

Potatoes in containers
Fixed-depth containers work just fine for potatoes.  Fill with compost or soil to maybe 12" below the top.  The haulm can be earthed up with additional soil up to (and a little beyond) the top of the container.   Any container deeper than perhaps 30" is, IMHO, a waste of compost since the roots won't go down to the bottom.

Variable-depth containers - by which I mean ones where the height is adjustable one way or another.   Put about 12" of compost/soil in the bottom of the container and put the seed potatoes in that.  Ensure they get full or nearly full light by reducing the height of the container.  I use recycled 150 litre forestry bags.  When the haulm is 5 or 6" high, add more compost and increase the height of the container.  Repeat until full.  The great attraction of this method is the hugely increased yield possible in a given area.
