Babe, I grew potatoes one year (in our tiny garden in England) in a black rubbish bin and they turned out grand

its just that the proper planters are £25 each
where as the local coucil sell the composters, with a door at the bottom in two sizes for £8 for 220ltr or £10 for 330 ltr.
and its my first potato so dont want to spend a fortune, and i get an extra compost bin to use when i finally grow a tatty in the ground.

You could try using old tyres painted, and stacked, you may be able to get them for free from a garage.  :)

Judging by the picture, the doors are there to put tatties IN just before the photo gets taken

You'd get them out once the growing season is finished. The bins and tires would simply be lifted up and the spuds would be left.

:? Look at how clean they are - methinks Daithi's right, and the person in the photo is putting the ones from the basket into the planter :?

On the subject of tyres they should be free as we pay our tyre supplier
£2 per tyre to remove them.

Use a multipurpose compost sack turned inside out (black side outside). Top bag up with the compost as tatties grow tip the bag out to harvest.Try 2 to 3 sets per bag.Cost price of compost about 3 quid in total.

The main problem is that you don't have a way to fill it gradually.  Normally you start with a little compost and add 6" at a time as the haulm grows.  A deep black bin will lead to a very spindly haulm.
