Do my tomato plants look ok?
« on: April 25, 2012, 14:09 »
Hi,

I've only ever grown things like sunflowers from seed before, but as I saw some Sungold tomato seeds for 20p from T&M I thought I couldn't go wrong for that price and off they hopped into the basket!

Well back on the 12th March I sewed them and to my surprise all 10 germinated!

Well this is now they looked back on the 10th April:

Still fairly small.

Fast forward 15 days and this is what they look like now:

Some of the side leaves are getting quite long - is this usual?  Is this correct?

Looking closely at the largest one there seems to be buds coming alredy:

They seem to have grown so much over the last couple of weeks!  I would say they are about 5" tall by now.

They may have been ony 20p and when I bought them I didn't think I would mind if they did anything or not, but now I'm longing for them to perform well!

I don't have a greenhouse so they have been residing in my conservatory all this time.

Going by the current weather it's going to be a while before they can go outside!  I'm a bit worried I started them off too soon, altough the packet did say March to April for outdoor growing.  They look a little more delicate than the ones I've bought from the garden centre before..?

Thanks

Hannah

most of mine are about that size too. Should we be repotting them into much bigger pots yet?

personally at that size mine would be going in to larger pots now right at bottom then as the grow on add more compost to create a strong root system and then wait for the fruits! :D

They look fine but need to go into bigger pots ,when transplanting put deep enough to first pair of leaves ,the ones that usually go yellow will encourage more roots to grow and wont be so leggy.Mine are in there final pots now in greenhouse but i do have heat on at night.

I was wondering that, although I've pretty, much run out of space and pots.  Will have to see what I can do over the next weekend!

Look on your local Freecycle/Freegle. Often cheaper than that!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've just potted mine on into some medium sized pots from morrissons which are 3 for 75p at the moment. They say 15 cm on the label but are much bigger than that so i don't know if they've mislabelled them. Off to the carboot this weekend to see if I can get any cheap big pots.

Why not buy some of the ex-flower buckets that Morrisons sell off. They are usually 8 for 99p but i got 11 for 99p last week. Have a good look through what they have, some are bigger than others and with a few holes drilled in the bottom will do you fine and is probably your cheapest option. :)

Try Morrisons they sell off there flower buckets for 99p. for 8. All you have to do is drill some holes in the bottom. They are about 10 - 12 inches across the top

Out of interest, how do you drill holes in these without either the drill bit slipping off the pot, or without cracking the plastic of the pot?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I don't drill, it can crack the plastic, depending on its brittleness.

I make holes by melting them in with a soldering iron. The same effect cam be obtained by heating up a metal skewer, if you have a gas hob.

Good ideas - hot metal skewer sounds hot though (even with an oven glove) !
