That's all very interesting, SM! Being a bit of a troglodyte, I never really contemplate what it's like gardening so far North! You really do have to get the timing just right don't you!

As for leggy seedlings, I discovered that it's fine even to bury the first foot of a plant's roots if necessary, as it forms new roots along the underground stem!

We grow most of ours in pots with  half compost, half sifted soil, and stand them all in trays. It got a bit expensive the first year, as that's quite a lot of compost, and also trays and pots, but over the years we can reuse nearly everything.

I potted on the last thirteen yesterday and will now stop at 85 total plants, as there aren't any seedlings anywhere to be seen at last!

SM, having a glut of tomatoes to "process" is what I am aiming for too 

Last year I had a lot of success bottling cooking sauces for pasta or curries, and as long as they were a minimum of 60% tomato by volume, they were plenty acidic enough without worrying. The first lot was a bit runny, but got it right after that and it saved us a fortune.

I have the next batch ready to pot up, but stood this afternoon and wondered where to put these exactly 

I think I shall have to disembark the large potted ones each day (These are for the cold greenhouse at the plot) and stand them on the path at night, unless I can miraculously stretch the length of the staging
