Netting for brassicas
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:56 »
I have not really got onto addressing this properly yet.

How do others rig up or build netting frames etc to protect from cabbage white?  I have rigged up some wood with the netting draped over my raised beds.  One failed dismally with the butterflies squeezing through the holes (netting holes too big) and the other may be holding up as far as I can see.

So, any advice for construction or design for effective prevention?

We have had absolutely millions of the little darlings around this year!

There are many topics in existence on this subject.

Try putting "netting brassicas" or "butterfly netting" into a forum search.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well, I've just been having a look through your blog Kristen - it's lovely!!  I see what you mean about the netting and hoops now.

Funny isn't it - the hoops and close netting look absolutely logical but don't always occur - it just needs advice and a picture from someone else to show the way sometimes.

Thanks for the netting advice and pictures - i'll be following your blog!!

"Thanks for the netting advice and pictures "

Glad it is of some use.

I am sure that canes with balls on the top, or similar, will do fine - if you don't have water pipe to hand.

Some people put flowerpots on top of canes. I built a cage and used butterfly netting but the little b****rs still got through. I've killed, by hand, hundreds of catterpillers but they've still munched their way through my sprout leaves. It's debris netting for me next year.

I nabbed my mates broken gazebo poles, stuck them together so they were about 4ft high, place empty lager tins over the top of each pole  :D, and draped 2 lots of old pond netting over that.  As I was using freebie netting, I used two layers, but some pesky cabbage whites till got though...GRRR!!

Debris netting is much finer, and should be resistant to cabbage whites (although they are not active now...pigeons are the main problems thoughout the winter).

Old net curtains are the best, scab them off your granny or great aunt.......free and effective  ;)
