Advice on different age of chicks together
« on: July 24, 2010, 06:42 »
Hi, we have a 5 week old chick who is on its own at night in a small hen house. Its Mum died at the beginning of the week. It spends its day running around the garden with the other hens although it is always on its own as it is still a bit scared of them but they have been okay with it but i feel so sorry for it as it is on its own. My questions are - as we have just hatched out another 12 on Wednesday there in the incubator, bearing in mind that the overnight temperature here at the moment  is around 28 deg centigrade
1.Could i move the 12 new chicks out to the small hen house with the 5 week old?
2.Would it attack them? Thanks, Maggie

How do you normally care for the new hatched chicks in that temperature? Do they usually go out into their own little run straight away? If so you could try them together but keep a close eye on them just to be sure. Its a shame she is on her own.

I'd let the 5 week old run with the older chickens but you'll need to feed it away from them as it should still be transitioning from chick crumbs to growers,  It is too old to be with your new hatchlings.  If your other birds aren't bothering it it will soon learn to  fully integrate and eventually roost with them.

Best of luck

My problem hillfooter would be that we don't have another henhouse as the 5 week old is in the small one at the moment

As you're not likely to get regular rain courtesy of where you live could you use a large, strong cardboard box or similar or pet carrier - just a thought :)
