Rotovators/Tillers etc
« on: January 26, 2007, 14:47 »
Hello all,
I'm tempted to look for a good 2nd hand rotovator and/or tiller to help with the digging bit of preparing my new plot.  I think I have mainly meadow grass to deal with, but I will examine it more thoroughly to check, as I have read alot of your postings and articles, and realise chopping certain weeds really helps to spread them!  Are there any brands or types of machines I should avoid, or any I should try to aquire, as all the adverts make them sound great, but there's no substitute for experience!
'just because your paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you!'

Mine runs well on 4* (Sainsbury sell it)

Oil - not sure.

Incidentally there's a user manual if you don't have it for download on the site:

the oil is supposed to be a nonograde SAE 30.
you can use 20W 5o car oil at a pinch if you cant find the other. :)

not really, shaun. best to use a proper oil for actual geaboxes like SAE90 or SAE80.
chains are best oiled with a chain oil. if you`re thinking of the drive boxes on say a merry tiller, because its a sealed unit, you can use a lighter oil. so refer to the user manual. :D
just had a look and they recomend SAE30 for the chaincase as well.

ive never used hydraulic oil just that this chap told me it was ok.
have you seen a spray rustproofer its called "waxoyl" by hammerite its realy good for linkages, cables and stuff that is open to the weather it clears the rust and lubricates at the same time also it stays there for a while
highly recomended

ive never thought of using it on there.
its very good at rustproofing the parts on older cars that rot away, like inside the bottom of doors and so on.
