Bung for water butt
« on: August 18, 2007, 17:11 »
I have been given an old water butt with no tap. I can't find a tap to fit it so I need a rubber bung that I could hammer in the hole but I can't find one anywhere.

I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere that sells those tapered rubber bungs or if you could suggest an alternative way of sorting it out.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Why can't you get a tap Lynne  :?:   Most garden centres and DIYs sell spares.

If the hole is in the usual place then a bung will almost certainly not hold the pressure of the water in the butt. Is the butt metal or plastic, and is the hole at the top or the bottom?

If the bung is tapered and is inserted from the inside, wont the pressure hold it in place?

I would go for the tap personally!  :D

If you just want to block it up. A quick and easy way would be to get a plastic milk carton cut a large patch out of it enough to cover hole and then some, get some instant gasket from a car parts shop. Lay your butt on its side work from the inside put a ring of IG around hole put your plastic patch on the top of it, hold it all in place with a brick or two. leave it for 24 hour to set and bingo. Not pretty but will work (usually   ).

I'm trying to work out why you'd get a hole at the top  :?  :?

Thanks for all your suggestions. Yes, the hole I'm talking about is the one at the bottom, not the big one at the top

I'll keep trying more shops for a tap that fits, so far none do. It's a plastic butt but no makers name on it. If all else fails, I'll try the suggested ways of filling the hole. I too thought a tapered bung on the inside would block it. My plan was to use it as an overflow butt for my other bigger one if I can't get a tap.

if you just want to fill the hole why not try two big washers and a nut and bolt and a bit of rubber as a seal or you could use bath sealant if you have time to let it dry
