Hubby has one Chrissie, its a de-nailer, or a nail puller or they sometimes get called a slide hammer. they use them for taking the nails out of floorboards, but they are not cheap.  his last one was about £30.

Tool Shops over here sell them, but not easy to find.  Here is a link to one website that does them.  Hubby's is the 2nd picture downThe Priory 150

Good luck!!!

Most pallets are assembled using special one-way nails.  They have got a slight spiral which makes them particularly difficult to extract.

ooh, yes, I'd forgotten about that!  I'll have to get Brian to try  his nail puller on a pallet and see how hard it is!!!!!

I use a thing called a 'wrecking bar' - basically an oversized crowbar, together with a lump hammer, and lots of swearing  :!:

I've got a 99p crow bar, a hammer and a bolster chisel. They seem to work well. Sometimes my Turkish neighbour helps as well.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I can't be bothered getting the nails out and just cut the nails back to the wood with an angle grinder (after dismantling the pallet with a jigsaw and a hand axe) and any bits that aren't good enough for re-use get cut up for kindling.

Oh boy, I have been wanting to know the answer to the pallets thingy for ages!  I have the pallets (to make the bins) I even bought a hammer with a thingy on the end    from the £1 shop! Last of the big spenders me.  The  pallets look all lost and the nails are still in place. I'm going for the leave in place choice and hope no-one gets lock jaw!
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!

I have found through experience that using a pair of crowbars, one either side of the strip and levering it up is a much easier way than trying to hammer or prise a pallet apart with a bolster. So much so I felt stoopid after discovering it after much hammering apart.    :?  :D
