Maybe made a mistake with bubblewrap?
« on: June 01, 2007, 08:38 »
I've lined out my greenhouse with bubblewrap for extra shading for the summer.  Have I done the right thing because since then I've found out about the shading you just paint on?  From what I gather the bubblewrap is used for insulation in the cold weather, is this correct??
Will it still be ok used for shading or will greenhouse get more hot than usual with the bubblewrap in summer???

Bubblewrap will give some shading, especially when it goes opaque (but then it will stop too much light in winter).

Provided it doesn't prevent ventilation, it shouldn't cause overheating.

I've used bubble wrap to insulate my greenhouse winter and summer for years.  I've always had good, strong, stocky plants.  The bubble wrap really helps to keep the summer temperature down and maintains the temperature over night which paint on shading does not do.  Good ventillation is essential !

How many years does it last please Aunty?  I assume that eventually it becomes brittle and completely opaque??

I use the stuff with the big bubbles. and my current lot has been on for about 4 years.  I take it off the door side in the summer just so I can see out when I'm in there.  It's still quite clear, but I hate the stupid clips you fit it up with to the aluminium frame,  I'm going to use some wires stretched the length of the house to keep it in place as soon as I get the time.

Nice one.  Anyone looking for free bubblewrap would do well to befriend their neighbourhood furniture shop.  They've usually got lots, albeit the small bubble stuff.

It's just a form of double glazing John.  Keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer

I too have used B/Wrap on my greenhouses for years. You can buy clips that hold it off the glass to make double glazing suitable for winter and summer. But you must have good ventilation. On very hot summers I have also used Cool Glass white shading as well, all to no ill effects.By the time I use this the plants are well on in their growth cycle, and it has provided me with some outstanding toms and cucumbers etc. :D

When you use that cool glass does enough sunlight still get through??  I was gonna get some but thought that it might block out too much sunlight.
