Don't have a plot, just the back garden, but the last four leeks.  I think they're only fit for soup for the weekend.  New broad beans are going well, plus the over wintered shallots which were 'escapee's from last years 'cull'. Getting our 'grow' bug back together after a couple of years off.

It's been mostly rhubarb, but that's starting to thin out now.
Asparagus has started, but my old crowns have do far only produced 3 stems. But lots of bindweed - I couldn't dig it out in the winter, so used a handfork as best as I could.
I think when the ferns have grown I'll give it a jolly good dig over.

Gordon gave me some of his asparagus, so I've had at least some harvest!
And Alan gave me a cauliflower yesterday, so our dinner was a lovely cauliflower cheese with asparagus.

First lot of new potatoes from the greenhouse yesterday  :)

Also picked chard at the plot and pulled a few overwintering onions to use as giant spring onions.  I over planted so I could thin them to eat.

Dunluce potatoes, from large home made cloche, JBA appears to be the only suppliers of the seed

Rhubarb,shared some with neighbours,

Strawberries, what the blackbird did not  sample first,

Chives

And finally Radish, never understand why I bother sowing the seed as they are useless!

2 fully ripe strawberries today.
they were horrible!
 ???
Possibly because it's been so very dry so no juice.
I hope that's why, otherwise I'll have to buy some new.
(These were left on the plot)

I also got 3 bulbs of what I think are garlic!

they shouldn't have been - they were volunteer onions. The leaves were going funny so I thought i'd dig them.up just in case, gave them a feel to see if they were hard and found they're segmented and decidedly garlic shaped!

Round courgettes, last of Ayrshire new tatties, broad beans and peas, plus some small beetroot thinned out in one row. And another pick of gooseberries.Picked these in a one hour window between rain yesterday, and another very localised monsoon here today. A few early rasps from the autumn canes.

Was too wet to pick the second lot of blackcurrants at home. Emptied the last Charlotte potatoes out one of the planters in the garden, and got a couple of tomatoes in greenhouse, but they are still well behind last year.

Decided to take the garlic and onions into the greenhouse to finish drying off on Friday, which was a very good move.

No watering needed for quite a long time!

Title: Re: Daily Harvest
Post by: New shoot on January 07, 2020, 17:14
One intended crop and two bonus ones  :)

The intended one was turnip tops.  I sowed these last autumn under a mesh tunnel and then forgot about them.  That tunnel moved today to a new plot position, so the greens were picked and I got a few bonus turnips as well.

Then I finished emptying out a compost bin and discovered a little haul of new potatoes.  They must have grown late last year from a peeling, as that is when I filled the bin and sealed it.  I don't remember seeing potato foliage though.  It must have sneaked out through the back and been hidden

First proper harvest of the season, ten roots of swift first earlier that needed lifting due to brown leaf spot, tubers ok, few small scab marks. About a third if the garlic, which is circa 50 bulbs (we use a lot in cooking) that i will get out in the sun this coming week. Salad stuff - spring onions, radishes and carrots. Hoping to be pulling blackcurrants off the bushes soon.

An early start today, on the plot at half six in the morning before work to pull up the remaining garlic and two crops of first earlies - red duke of York and sharpes express. Imminent rain this week meant they needed to come out of the ground. Some minor disease on the potato plants, consistent with black leg, but most of the tubes ok. Garlic nice and healthy and very potent on the nose!

Kent Blue Mangetout from the greenhouse.

I learn a lot about differences in terminology on each side of the pond every time I log in to allotment-garden.org

We call them snow peas in the States.  Mange tout (eat all) makes sense too.  We just ate the last of ours this past weekend (too hot for them now).

Love the fennel in particular. What variety is this NS? I tend to sow mine later in the year to try and avoid bolting. I'm waiting for mind to bulk up a bit in pots before going out.

Fennel Finale Potty  :)  It is made for sowing early.  I have grown it twice now and had success both times.   The later sown stuff never works for me and just bolts.

An hour after painting and decorating all weekend, lots of shallots, particularly a banana variety that were planted as sets in mid October plus some spring planted red sun. Field beans off a crop of green manure that i left to grow. Chantenay red core carrots from the deep root veg bed, plus spring onions and radishes for a salad. From the fruit bed in the back garden, a bowl full of raspberries. Chuffed to bits!

Harvested my onions at the weekend which took up a whole bed over the allotment. This is my first year growing at the allotment and I’m pretty happy with the yield. I built the drying rack for them too.

The plan for next year is to start them off from seed in November under a grow light in the shed. Hopefully I’ll have a few as big as my head!

Here’s my harvest of today’s carrots, they are a pale variety but I forget the name, could be from a pack of rainbow carrots but so far they have all been pale.
Not bad for no dig carrots that had a good covering of well rotted manure added after Christmas to the bed (but not dug in!) . Then the next photo is of  a second days harvest of yellow French beans with a few cannelini beans & a few peas

There are different textures to squash and the onion ones are on the soft side.  How did you cook it?  Roasted with chilli is a favourite here. I never steam or boil it as I am not a fan of the texture when cooked that way.

Just quartered it, scoped the seeds out, splash of rape seed oil and baked.  Had the texture of putty.

Not sure if I picked it too soon.  The variety was Uchiki Kuri.

I looked up that squash variety, it is a winter squash (Hubbard squash group).

Your thought that you picked too early may be correct; do you have a very rough idea when that particular squash started forming (such as number of weeks before you picked it)?  They should be allowed a long ripening period to be of the best flavor.  The skin should be very orange, verging on red, when ripe, the longer the better.  It is a popular variety, so you may be able to find specific cultural information, and harvest information, online.

There are many good recipes online for that variety too.  A very basic tried-and-true method is cut in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, a little butter inside each half, sprinkle on some cinnamon, bake in a glass dish at 350 F for an hour (adjust time up or down depending on squash size; squash should be cooked until soft).  Depending on your tastes, you can add brown sugar to that.

A luxurious harvest of fresh figs.  I pick them once they start to hang downwards and change colour and finish ripening them on the kitchen windowsill, as they get nibbled if left too long outside - probably wasps  ::)

They are not getting this lot though  :D

Picked some more long red peppers and yellow bell peppers, chillies - Apple Crunch and Lemon Drop, more runner beans and raspberries. Be careful cutting around leaks with that knife or you'll end up with a tub full of leeks.

Or the other way around...
... I'll get my coat.
Title: My final harvest of 2020 Re: Daily Harvest
Post by: Subversive_plot on December 02, 2020, 00:07
I thought my final harvest was last night, November 30, Serrano chilies, cayenne, and sweet banana peppers, plus a few tomatoes that I will ripen indoors, or fry green.

But today, I realized there were a few hot peppers that I missed, still in fine shape, so I picked those today (December 1).  [after more than a few misfires, I finally managed to get a couple photographs up!]

Nothing will survive the below freezing temperatures that we will have tonight. I consider myself fortunate, and am thankful for the plants that have kept producing all this time, as well as to have a little produce this late in the year.

I thinned a bunch of turnips that looked like they were not going to make proper roots.

Turnip greens are delicious, so the culls from my thinning became a nice pot of greens!  They are best when blanched, so after cleaning, bring salted water to a boil (teaspoon salt to a quart), drop in the greens, wait until they return to a boil, then wait one or two more minutes and drain.  You can season in any way that you would usually season greens.

A couple of small summer cabbages, a courgette, a mini cuke, tomatoes and french beans from the plot.

Bonus for the chooks as well. A handful of wheat that grew out of some bark chips that were in their run and that I was using as mulch  :)

Cleared my beetroot bed yesterday and cooked them in the pressure cooker.
Two lots cooked so far 20minutes for the biggest & 15 minutes for the next size. Have a few tiddlers left but not bad considering the rabbits . HH

Cucumbers and onions did well. Garlic decided that this was not their year. All the rain got the slugs active. The first half of summer was hot and dry so almost completely without slug activity.

It's been a weird year, and meant I am very late pruning back the brambles that grow over over the fence from the railway line. So today, when I finally started the job, I was pleased to pick 2 big bowlfuls of blackberries. With a few apples off my tree, they'll make some nice pies  :D

Harvested this years crop of blueberries.....all 3 of them  a few of what surely must be the last of the summer raspberries & 3 blackberries from the fruit cage- it’s coming out later this year as they have a definite twang to them, I much prefer the wild ones around the edge of the site!

Trying again to show off my huge pepper that I’ve been cosseting, I’ve never done well with peppers but this first year with my poly tunnel they’ve all done well & one plant has produced this beast that weighed 12 & a half ounces
Also here’s a huge trug full of mainly ripe toms from the tunnel that are now residing in my pantry as tomato, basil & garlic soup & pasatta
See if I can post a photo today, these were harvested along with the aubergines on Thursday before I set off to visit my sister.

Birds eye chillies that have been drying on the plants in the greenhouse.  I reckon it has got too wet outside for anything but damp air to circulate now, so brought them in and cut them off the branches.  A job for patience, but fine on a wet day with a cup of coffee by your side to keep you company.

They can finish drying off inside and be ready to blow the top of our heads off whenever we feel the need for it   Nothing like a dreary day to increase your appetite for hot, spicy food  :)

We have an abundance of jalapenos this year, I've just prepped this 1.4 pound lot to go into a batch of Mexican hot sauce.

I found out that you can make hot sauce and freeze it, so we will likely make another batch or two of hot sauce, red or green, before the season is done.

A few cherry tomatoes eaten straight from the vine & a small cucumber, dealt with in the same way . A handful of runner beans from the tunnel & a punnet of beautiful raspberries. There would have been an egg but 1 of the old hens chased 1 of the new ones just as I stepped out of the run, made me jump to shut the door & I crushed the egg

Amazed to find 6 mini cukes (La Diva) and a few handfuls of usable tomatoes.  :)

With a chance of frost tonight, and a hard freeze certain on Monday, I harvested the last of the jalapeno and sweet banana peppers (about 4 pounds of the former, 1 pound of the latter). Most of the jalapenos will go into green hot sauce. The banana peppers will be used fresh in salad, or may be pickled.

A kilo of sprouts, can really recommend Brilliant F1 if you want an early sprout.
One 1.2kg tundra cabbage, first of the season.
 Couple of kilos of beetroot.
About 500g of salad leaves - mizuna, mibuna, claytonia, land cress, salad rocket, chervil, pea shoots.
