Moving a rhubarb plant.
« on: May 03, 2014, 08:04 »
I've been offered a rhubarb plant from a friend, who has too many of them. However, I have no idea about rhubarbs (I don't like them, but Mrs James does), and I need to dig it up and move it four miles away and re-plant it at my allotment.

Is there a specific way I should dig it up, transport it, and re-plant it? And what sort of ground conditions does it require?

Many thanks!
I may be Welsh, but I love ewe anyway!

I recently just dug a bit up from partners dad's plant and it's currently in the garden with its roots in water... Seems healthy enough. It's going to be planted on Monday (I think!)

If it's a big plant, then it might be wise to devide it before replanting, or just cut a bit off the existing plant with a vertical cut using a spade. Not sure what your soil is like, but rhubarb likes rich soil with lots of organic matter and plenty of water, so dig in plenty of compost or well rotted manure and keep it we'll watered over summer.

As Nobbie says, plus I wouldn't harvest from it at all this year, and only lightly next year - to give it the best chance of settling in productively.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
