Radish maybe to show the rows as they will be harvested long before the parsnips are doing anything. Nothing else, give them space

I tried growing leeks between my parsnips and carrots.  Not recommended,  :(  the leeks got flattened by the parsnip tops; ended up having to support the parsnip tops.  Need something that is out of there reasonably early in the season to give the parsnips space above ground.

When I sow my parsnips I like to put radish seeds thinly along the drill, about 1 every inch. Parsnips are slow to germinate and the quick emerging radish show me where to look for parsnip seedlings. It also allows me to hoe right up to the row even before the parsnips are up. A crop of radish is usually a bonus. Once the parsnips get going the leaves will swamp anything.

I wondered about that for this year as my parsnips suffered from canker which was most likely caused by carrot root fly (getting their own back as i grown the carrots up in barrels out of the way).

How did you space then out. A row of parsnips, then a row of onions or did you dot the onions in the middle between parsnips (like the middle dot on a 5 side of a dice).

Can anyone recommend any other good companion plants for parsnips (I guess garlic would also be good).
Are you looking for an allotment (full or to share) in South East Sheffield. PM me for details.

feed the soil not the plants

i did a row of each, nwalch.

first year my onions were bigger, this last year the carrots/parsnips were.  grown near a tree first year so i think the roots from that limited carrot/parsnip growth.
