Potatoes past their sell by date?
« on: June 18, 2006, 13:55 »
I have just been given a large bag of rather well chitted main crop potatoes, is it too late to pop these in, and if they do go in when do I harvest??

Not too late at all - last July my plot neighbour dug out a bag of well chitted spuds, untangled them  and told me to plant them for Christmas! I needed to clear some ground, so popped them in - and had lovely spuds in November :D

Time to maturity would depend on variety (early, second early, maincrop) - but you'll get a crop later this year sometime in the autumn! 8)

They reckon don't they that you shouldn't leave spuds in the ground after October, but say you plant them now, they should be ready before then as October is still 4 months away.

Last year I tried to get the spuds for Christmas, so I planted 4 in big pots and kept them in the greenhouse.  They didn't make it for Christmas, and 2 of the spuds died, but we did have them for New Year, so this year I am going to plant some at the end of july, and hopefully will get those Christmas potatoes!!!!!

Sounds daft but what do I do with the long chitty bits...I mean bury them or do they have to stick out. This is all a bit new so sorry for sounding dim.

Hi debbie, don't think there's a stock answer to this one but worked for me on 8-11" shoots last year

dig hole for spud
cover, with chitted shoots pointing up, trying not to snap them off
cover the ends of the shoots with up to an inch of compost/earth so they can break through to sunlight very quickly

Good luck! I feel like saying 'don't try this at home' lol :D
