Title: Do any suppliers sell seed potatoes in small quantities
Post by: missmoneypenny on January 12, 2019, 10:27
I only want to grow 5 potato plants this year. Does anyone know of a supplier that sells small year I had so many I ended up chucking some away. In theory I could give some away but I find no one wants them as everyone else on the plot has too many!

You're likely to pay a disproportionate amount of P&P for such small quantities; it would probably be more cost effective to buy a 1kg bag of seed tubers and only use half of them.  You might find that other plotholders want to share a bag if they have a little extra space.

Also, keep an eye open for local potato days; you can often buy loose tubers there, I believe.

Why don't you ask if you can have 5 of theirs?
In exchange for seeds they need?

Thanks everyone, I think I’ll just wait and see if any one has any “spares” it does mean I won’t be able to choose what variety I grow, but you never know, I might make a discovery!
I seem to have less and less space as the years go by, and one disadvantage of spuds is they take up a lot of space.

Garden centres sell small bags of them, well Wyevales has in the past, I’m sure some were bags of 5. The garden centre I get mine from sell them loose, 50 plus varieties, they’ve got them in but I’ve yet to go, what variety were you after? I could send you some if they have them

DD..Hawgrips have got there seed potatoes if you hadn’t already been 😊

Wilkos sell bags with 5 tubers and usually have three or four different ones to choose from.

Some garden centres sell them loose so you can choose what are the best of the bunch.

So do hardware stores - our local independent one lets you pick out individual spuds so you could have 5 different varieties!

Some of the High Street discount shops usually sell small (6 or 8 ) packs of seed spuds for 99p. Not a lot of choice in terms of varieties though and tend to be 1st/2nd earlies.

If you can grow them in tubs or pots could you do one plant on the corner of some of your other beds?
the tubs I mean, not in the ground.

Fill up every space.

You can also grow sone plants up high, in half barrels or trays, on legs so you can use the ground underneath.
I'll see if I can find a picture of that....

The small packs from Wilko might be your best bet. Sometimes when I've bought loose from garden centres I've noticed they pile them that high that some fall into neighbouring sections therefore you risk growing something quite different to what you expected!

B&M, Home Bargains and The Range near me always do a £1.99 or 3 for £5 deal on small bags.  Its not a bad selection with first and second earlies and a few mains.

Its all the same stuff in each shop, so if you have any of those near you, it is worth a look.  They keep them inside the store, so pounce as soon as they arrive and store them somewhere better yourself.

Usually the deal includes spring planting onion sets and garlic, so if you really only want a few, you can mix and match with other stuff.  I was going to have a look next week, so I can get a few extras in small numbers to add to my mail order ones  :)
