A New Planter
« on: May 11, 2021, 13:35 »
I bought one at the end of last year, but didn't use it.    I see it has a gauze of plastic which fits in about 3 inches from the base.  I have never seen this before.  How do I use it ?     Mrs Bouquet

I suspect it will be a barrier to enable water storage at the bottom, and/or drainage to prevent compost getting wholly waterlogged. I'd just put the compost on top and plant as usual.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I’d too think it would be a water reservoir,is there a wick or anything?

Only insert I've seen in planters is to provide a reservoir at the bottom to extend the period between waterings, in which case there is usually a plastic pipe which attaches to the insert to allow the reservoir to be filled directly from just above the soil level.

If no pipe, nor means of attaching one, I guess it must be to help prevent waterlogging, as Yorkie has already suggested.
