Cutting sweet peas
« on: June 30, 2016, 13:14 »
So I always thought you had to cut them often, even every day.  Now I read Monty Don saying on Facebook that pick the lot then leave for 9 or 10 days then pick the lot again...what do you folks do?  Cheers!

If I ever manage to grow them rather than providing nicely scented food for slugs  , then I tend to pick more frequently than that.  If only because I don't want to have a glut that I can't find vases for, and then a gap without them for a few days after the cut ones die and the new ones are ready.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I cut mine virtually daily and they carry on flowering for ages. The odd splash of tomato fertiliser on the way past is appreciated. If I left then for ten days some would have set seed pods and I'd have to cut them off anyway. I'd rather have the flowers

Yes I agree with you both, I think I'll go on cutting often and ignore Monty on this occasion!

I have not grown them for a couple of years (don't know why), I used to cut every day or second day at the latest.

You can always completely cut half of them, then after Monty's ten days, do the same to the other half...

We cut ours once or twice a day, and Sunny's right, a splash of Tomorite does them the power of good!
