What breeds are my hybrids related too? PICS
« on: September 06, 2012, 10:55 »
Hi all,
I have some 12 week old chicks that were hatched from random eggs bough from ebay. Can anyone tell me anything about them?

Heres some pics.

Thanks :)

The dark one with light head looks like a Silver Sussex, the dark one with golden head looks like a Black Rock type cross.  Don't recognise the other one, very pretty but could be a rooster with the comb/wattle development if they are the same age!   ;)

Yeah the grey one (dusty hoffman) is a definite cockerel. The other 2 are called speedy and goldie. I believe one of them came from a white egg and the another from a bluey green egg.

As the Black Rock is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Barred Plymouth Rock I don't know what colour egg that would produce.

The Silver Sussex lay a creamy white egg.   :)

Dustin Hoffman is very handsome are you able to keep him?

Black rock types come from brown eggs.  Our shaver blacks are the same sort of cross and the eggs from the RIR x BPR were definitely brown.

The cockerel does look a bit legbar!  :)

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes I should be able to keep him alright. Though I have 5 cockerals at the moment I wanted to wait till the hens start laying so I can hatch the eggs. The chicks are 4-5months old now so it shouldnt be long but maybe the colder weather will delay them from laying. It would be nice to have one egg before Christmas to make this all worthwhile  :D

So if Dusty mated with a maran hen would the egg be a cross between blue and brown? Or does the egg characteristics keep with the hen so to speak?

If he has Legbar in him he will carry the gene that produces blue eggs. My guess is that if you x him with a marran the resulting pullets will lay a olive green egg. Will look lovely against the other eggs in the kitchen.

The one on the right looks like a Blue Cochin or Blue Orpington - hard to say with the low light. We have a hybrid that looks like a Blue Orpington, it's called a Bluebelle.
