Help with incubator hatch
« on: July 21, 2008, 13:20 »
Hi all,

I’m on day 23 of an incubator hatch, on days 20 and 21, one of the eggs was moving around a lot thought this would be first to hatch.

On day 22 it had stopped, I assumed it had died in the shell,

Today just candled it, (so if there’s nothing there I would remove it), and there is a heart beat,

I just can’t believe it.

Does anyone have any ideas what’s happening?

I guess I should leave it alone, but how long for?

Sorry,

yes they are hens eggs, the 21 days was up on Sat and they all went in at the same time.

Iv'e been having a look round on internet and the late hatch is due to too low temp. Temp was 37.5 until day 19 then dropped to 37.1 ish

Still don't know what to do with the live one in the shell, i can hear it, it's moving around a little, whats the chances of it surviving if i help it break the shell??

With something sharp and clean go in at the air cell end gently preffrebly candle first so you know your not going to stab him.

make a small hole which will allow the little fella a bit more air then give him/her a bit longer

I have also done this to good effect. You can gradually increase the hole if it is struggling to get out  but you must stop immediately if there is any bleeding. It means that it is still perfusing the membrane that lines the egg to get oxygen and it's not ready to leave the egg.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

If you do get a bit of bleeding don't panic, just pop baby straight back in incy, the warmth will help it dry up quicker

Hi all

Thanks for your replies,

Unfortunately this chick had died in the shell by the time I made a hole, I candle it when I got the replies and no heart beat, put the hole in anyway and crossed my fingers, nothing

However I have had some late hatches that have struggled to get out of the egg, so I used your advice to help these, the last one this morning, it looks knackered but should survive. :)

The result of my first incubator hatch is 8 silkies and a not sure but cute :D

Thanks again, I couldn’t have done it without all your help
