Title: Grit and oyster shell.
Post by: orchardlady on December 23, 2010, 22:41
More of a comment than a question but I've noticed that my free range hens and ducks really eat up the grit an oyster shell far more now the snow is on the ground and they are unable to forage far. So make sure your girls have plenty. I'm refreshing their supply every second day rather than once a week.

I have a different way of gettig my girls to have their grit, and that is to put a little into some warm porridge and mixed corn!  They dont even notice they are eating what they normally avoid.  They are so engrossed in getting the porridge down their throats they dont even stop to wipe their beaks and end up with a face full!

It was never really a problem to get them to eat the oyster shell and grit as I've always been of the view that they'll take what they require. It was just a gentle reminder for people to check that their birds have access to the oyster shell and grit as the snow on the ground has removed the opportunity to find 'wild' grit and shell.
