Title: growers, layers and cockerals

Well one thing that I just didn't think of when getting new chooks was that the layers are eating the growers pellets and the growers are at the layers and poor old Patrick is eating both!

Are there any health reasons why this would be a problem that you know of?  :?

Yes I should think there would be.  The forumulas are designed for the different needs of the birds regarding protein level and calcium required for laying eggs.

So Annie, if the layers pellets have calcium in them why do we give the girls extra in the form of oyster shells?  :?

Because our hens generally free range and the layers pellets are not their entire diet.  If it was they would not need a suppliment.

Imho whether it might cause problems or not depends on what else is available to them. Layers pellets alone are only suitable for young hens anyway, older hens need extra shell grit.

well I do have to put out extra oyster shell for the older two but the young'uns haven't started laying yet (only 13 weeks).

Is it a problem for Patrick re what he eats?

They all free range all day in a massive run (approx 10m x 8m) so have access to greenery and extra 'protien'
