Moles
« on: February 19, 2012, 12:23 »
Not sure if this in the right place ?

I have a mole in my paddock where I'm planning my veggie patch and have just read with great interest about 'cooking' the soil from their hills, excellent, got loads of compost now  :D
what I was wondering however was if the moles themselves will do any damage to my beds or what's growing in them??

Also, are there any natural deterrents for rabbits? other than digging in and covering the plots with mesh??

Thank you

If they are not in great numbers they soon will be as they are pretty good at breeding. The problem is that as soon as the ground is cultivated it attracts worms and the worms attract moles, bit of a catch 22. They will damage the roots of your crops and or push them out of the ground especially if in great numbers. There are all sorts of scarer's but none that have worked for me. Humane traps aren't humane either as the moles get trapped in them and die of stress within minutes. I just leave them alone until they get a serious problem and then as sad as it is I have to cull them  :(. Marvellous creatures, just a pity they can become such a nuisance.

Nice dogs by the way.

we used to use these

http://www.targetsports.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=2732&ccSID=c9232877d986b6f746b5ee9043bb9cf7

very effective and pretty much like a reverse rat trap...kills them clean and fast.

I didn't really want to go down the culling line  :( however if it gets to be a problem then I'll have to re-think.

I've noticed that where they were entering our garden area, since the dogs have been here and toleting on it, no more mole hills have appeared, is that just good luck or will the scent of the dogs deter them??

I have a lot of moles around me and for the last couple of years I've been using sonic deterrents to keep them out of my veggie beds, and they've worked very well for me.
