What is best in pots?
« on: May 13, 2022, 16:27 »
I might have more of the following tomatoes, beans and sweetcorn than I have space for - can any of them go in pots? Thanks in advance.

Not so sure about sweetcorn but I've grown beans, both dwarf and climbing in 30l+ pots and the same with tomatoes.  They take a lot of watering, so bigger the pot is better, I wouldn't bother with anything less than 10l.

Tomatoes definitely. Mine have gone into pots of about 20L. If cordon varieties put three pots together to allow you to make a tripod of bamboo canes-one in each. Helps with the support. Even more so if you go for 6 or 9 pots them connect the tripods together with more bamboo canes!

Or buy grow bags cut them in half widthways to create two pots.

I grow loads in post and have done for decades.
Tomatoes, french climbing/dwarf beans and spare gherkins and peas all do well for me.
Of course, larger pots and bags for early and maincrop potatoes.

Have seen others grow sweetcorn successfully, just do a search in youtube.
Of course, for pollination it will be important to have a number of pots together, as you'd be having one plant per pot.

To help with drainage,  to get nutrients and allow them not to dry out, allow the pots to sit on a soil bed, even at the edges. So as well as watering the pot, water around them too.

Rather than a pot, a used compost bag cut in half or rolled down works very well, with some added drainage holes.

we have done well with potatoes in 55/70 litre tree tubs 3 per pot we are also trying compost bag rolled down 1 per bag [we had a few left over] also carrots seem to do well  earlies as a late crop after first potatoes tipped out  good luck.

You can try courgettes. One plant per 10 gallon pot.

I'm learning a new phone, which has caused this plant to tip over on it's side.

With a sturdy wall bracket or two, some empty lidded buckets (chicken manure pellet containers are ideal) and a little simple DIY you can grow bush tomatoes upside-down, hanging on a wall or other structure. Dead easy and highly prolific.

Tumbling Tom is an ideal U/D tomato; the yellow ones are yummy!

The two tomato varieties with 'tumbling' in their name (red and yellow) are specifically bred to have a trailing habit; they are not regular tomatoes grown upside down.

In my experience, trying to grow plants of regular habit upside down, just leads to them turning back the right way up after a few inches' downwards-growth
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
