lilies in a pot
« on: March 14, 2011, 23:12 »
I planted two small pots with a bulb in each last spring and they flowered really well. They are starting to grow again but there seems to be five or six stems coming out of each pot.Should I leave them to it,split them or what(I have no idea with lilies).Thank you.

When you look at a lily bulb, you'll see it's composed of many 'scales', similar to an artichoke. As the lily grows, the outer scales will start to root and eventually create new shoots and plants. For the time being, I'd leave them as is, and next spring you can carefully dig up the whole bulb area and separate the new shoots, then replant with a bit of better spacing. Or, you can just leave them. Lilies will adapt any old way.

They are new bulbs but they will take a number of years to flower.
