Can i plant my spuds yet?
« on: February 25, 2014, 14:43 »
Went to a spud day in Shropshire last week and bought some lovely seed potatoes, they have chitted already to some degree and i was wondering if this weekend was too soon to plant, given the nice weather and the fact they will be underground from the frosts???

What time of year do people normally plant their potatoes where you live?

Where I live, we're three weeks away from earliest usual date. If yours are so good, it would be a shame to lose them for want of waiting a bit longer.

Here in Kent we don't usually plant until about the 17th March - it may be later this year because the ground is still very wet. Even planting then they still have to be covered if late frost is forecast.

We have no idea where you live or what your soil conditions are or when your last frost is likely, sorry.

It's times like this that a location in your profile is very helpful  ;)

Making the great assumption that you're somewhere near Shropshire, you're about on a latitude with me.

I'll be looking at another 4 weeks. My memory has been scarred by frost in early June!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was thinking of sneaking 1 of 2 first earlies in a container in a coldframe/lean-to greenhouse this weekend!  I know I'm taking a risk as we could still get a frost sever enough to affect the area but.... I'm eager...

I have too many Lady Cristl potatoes anyhow - so if they don't succeed no great loss...

That is not possible!

A pot or two in a location such as you said should be OK, but no way would I consider open ground in this area.

I know it sounds crazy!  But it's only me going to be eating them...

I haven't anywhere but containers to grow them... I'd ordered them in the hope that I would have moved house come planting time... but not looking like it now... so all my purchased potatoes are destined for containers!
