Today I have prepped a spud bed, dug trenches and planted spuds in the ground, but I discovered a novel way to do it.
I hate digging trenches but love eating spuds so it's a neccessary evil, but I have discovered the perfect way for those of us who love digging trenches but hate eating spuds to deal with the spud planting problem.
first, dig over the ground, remove all those tiresome roots from trees you dug out years ago.
next, dig a trench and cover the base with the organic material of your preference, mine was manure.
Finally fill in the trench leaving the seed spuds in the tray to chit another day! This method ensures that they are not put in eyes down.
Now I am not for one moment suggesting that this is in fact what I did, because the truth is I discovered half way through the trench filling that something was missing from the trench, but I thought, share your expertise, someone out there is bound to be able to benefit from this new non spud method of growing spuds.

Only me and puppy as witnesses (and anyone who reads this site of course but assuming no one actually knows who I really am!!!). Anyway, got all my earlies in and some main crop. Need to clear a bit more land before the rest go in.

Personally, I'd love to see the crop from the chitting tray

when i plant mine I have to tie the dog up cus she tends to pinch them out of the trench and eat them.

He nearly got one but to be honest he prefers twigs and stones to chew on. My lawn is completely covered with the rubbish he chews up, great for the lawn mower.

Our dog is like that crowndale. The back lawn looks like a woodyard, or rather a matchstick factory!!!! Goodness knows what's inside her tummy!!!

Well Crowndale, that definitely deserves a 'wassuck' certificate. What do you think Munty??

Today I have prepped a spud bed, dug trenches and planted spuds in the ground, but I discovered a novel way to do it.
Last year I only planted 5 seed potatoes because I just could not dig or indeed hardly move. I scraped a small trench and popped in the spuds. Before I could fill in the trench the phone rang and on my return the spuds had gone. I could not find them. So scratching my head I planted some more. One of next doors cats, a welcome visitor, walked along picked up a spud and went behind the shed. I followed and found the others plus a couple of soft toys and an assortment of plastic balls. :?

Sorry I forgot to add,Crowndale your way beats my way hands down. Glad no one saw you

My cats haven't tried to steal the spuds but then they have tried using the newly dug over spud bed as a toilet. I am getting heartily sick of having to cover every single bed with netting just to keep my blasted cats off them, they are the biggest nuisance my garden has! This morning I found one of them stripping my elderberry tree, well, I say 'tree', it is only 18 inches high, but will not get much bigger iof they keep stripping it so I have had to put net on that as well.

I have no less than 6 cats that visit my garden. Not one gives me any bother. Silky insists on helping or must look into everything but never digs anything up or leaves any unwanted deposits. The rest just lay around watching. Some times I have one on the fence one next to me and one about 9 feet away. The downside is that I never have any birds in my garden not one. They do sell electric cat scare devices,or even water jets that target movement. These do work. Plus pop bottles filled with water and laid around.(this From a lottie owner on these Forums). There is a lot you can do including a bit of cat training. :D

Trouble is they mostly mess the beds during the night, and it might even be a strange cat doing it, I have even wondered about foxes as some of the deposits are HUGE and most un cat like, for my cats anyway. I spray the beasts when I see them or say pshh at them because they hate that!
I found a big balck cat today coming out of my shed (which is shut by a couple of bricks). I have known for a while that something was living in there but not seen anything til today. time to clear it I think, it's full of old cardboard boxes (flat packed).
It may well be time for a different approach to simply netting, I had thought of fruit cages! But thats an expensive option.
