I have a flymo strimmer and when I use it the line just feeds out and becomes a tangled mess. I have tried winding the spool both ways but it didn't cure it. If I pull the line it seems to lock and I have to push the release button to click the spool and release some line.

you do not say what model of strimmer but its possibly a worn  or damaged spool mechanism if it is just "shooting" the strimmer line out when you try to use it. but seems to work when you try it by hand.

 hi some flymo strimmer heads wrap the lines one to the left the other to the right this makes them feeb out evenly  jezza

Are you using the recommended strimmer line and not a poor substiute?
