Title: The shop in the shed/freezer/stashed in jars...
Post by: New shoot on November 25, 2017, 16:02
It must be one of my favourite bits of home growing, so I really need no excuse, but squirreling away supplies for the winter really does pay.  My shed is full of goodies and its like having your own private shop  :D

I've raided it today and got spuds, onions, garlic and squash (spaghetti and normal).  That together with the supplementary supplies from the freezer have made h.m. soup, plus provided veg for tea and veg stashed in the fridge for later.  I'm now eyeing up the chutney options for a spicy addition to the meal later.

If I put the oven on, I try and fill it so squash was roasted for soup - overs have gone in the freezer, spaghetti squash baked and scraped out into a bowl for later meals and spuds were part roasted.

Got a proper smug face on now  ;)

That's how it should be for proper growers. Not these part timers that say the plot is clear in November and go home till March to buy from the supermarket.

With all the jars of jam and preserves, and the multitude of bottled stuff on shelves in the cupboard, bags of spuds, nets of onions, etc, and two very full freezers, my daughter-in-law always says that it's like visiting a shop.  The only thing I've failed to find for her was fresh courgettes in January.  She grew up in Italy, and hadn't realised that veg is much more seasonal here.

Yes I too love squirrelling it away, it’s sometimes an issue convincing others in this house to use what we have got, usually potatoes in that a certain someone always wants new potatoes before they are ready & then once they are wants mashed potatoes! Plus that someone doesn’t ‘do’ little spuds & will only prepare the bigger ones, leaving the marbles for me to prepare!! Grr. Mind you my homegrown ones didn’t do so well this year so we are buying already

Squirelling is an art, News, and both you and me are still getting used to it...

I just can't abide waste, so I'm always finding stuff from leftovers, usually, to go with pasta, and even Mrs Growster likes the idea, so she can have any delicacy she wants while I peer at some lamb dish nobody has ever heard of, with some penne and a dollop of ketchup (or 2014 passata)!

That's what growing your own is all about, I mean, who'd freeze Twongos soup or vegetable curry!

(Look in the bottom drawer on the right Growster, it's all there, labelled and ready for Tuesday - BLAST)!

Ah  :D Squirrelling is one of my favourite pastimes, and at the time in the year our garage (well, the section of it I am allowed to use) is indeed like a well stocked shop. Jars shine like multi-coloured jewels, and trays of apples, onions, shallots and garlic make it smell rather good too! The potatoes are out of sight in their hessian sacks, covered with thick cloth, although the squashes reside in the spare bedroom as it does get a bit cold out there for them later in the Winter. Does make the grandchildren smile when they come to stay though.

Our youngest calls our garage the Food Mine for some reason

I always feel that we could survive quite well if we get snowed in at all

And there is always plenty to give as festive presents too  :D :D :D

Lovely post all. Nothing quite as impressive for me, rod caught fish in the deep freeze, some pickled onions, and a string of shallots!!
Cheers
