Can I move daffodils and tulips now?
« on: March 22, 2016, 19:50 »
As some of you may know I'm giving up the allotment at the end of the month. The problem is I have a lovely collection of daffodils and tulips, is there any way of bringing these home or will moving them at this time of year kill them?

If you don't try you won't have them anyway, it has got to be worth a go. Dig a trench and add plenty of compost then put them all in 'in the green'. Give them a good feed. Once they have died back lift and store them or replant where you want them permanently. They may miss a year flowering but at least you have them.

Agree with Trikidiki, what's to lose? Probably you will miss an years flowering, but you certainly won't kill them.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

Thank you for the replies, I'm hoping to get up for a final visit on Sunday so hopefully I can salvage them.

Yes you can move the daffs but dont plant them to close together as this can cause no flowers to flower in the spring they need a bit of space between bulbs,
After flowering the bulbs start to take in next years feed, So when you replant give both the soil your planting into a good feed (mix bone meal and soil for a slow feed) and manure over the top soil for a rich feed, you'll have many years of daffs if you take the time now to replant them.
