using same pot
« on: March 21, 2016, 21:52 »
Does any one plant any bedding plants on top of died back daffodils in pots or is it best to take them out to store. I read sometime ago that you can layer bulbs to flower at different times. Thought it would save on space storing as first time using pots for daffs.

I always plant over the top of Spring bulbs and the bulbs seem to last well enough to flower again the following year. They are well down in the pot and so are not disturbed when I take out annuals at the end of the season.

Thanks for that Sunshine, what annuals do you plant, i have just sown poached egg and cosmos seeds, think their roots may go to deep.

If you consider where daffs grow naturally they don't have bare soil above them all year. As long as they have access to water nutrients and light during their allotted growing season they won't be bothered what's above them. The alternative of being pulled up and stuck in a dark shed can't be any more appealing. Only problem with leaving them in pots is the temptation to cut the leaves off too soon.

It is probably a good idea to empty the pot every 4/5 years because the compost will get tired and bobs will divide.

That's a good idea, never thought of that! I don't have much space so it's going to be really handy, usually I just put the pots with the flowered bulbs in them in a corner. Will definitely try annuals this year.

Sorry about all the funny spelling but I am in France with just the tablet and I can either see the keyboard or the text, not both together.
