My next door plotter grew his carrots in troughs four feet off the ground and still has had the fly. I kid you not four feet off the ground.

This year I used enviromesh and 100% success, will be getting more for next year so I can sow more carrots.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I grow 3 x 32' rows of carrots, so that solution is not practicable for me!

DD all under enviromesh?
If so wow that must of cost a few pennies.

Back from Holiday this week and this thread reminded me that I should have a nice lot of carrots ready for plucking.....!  :D Thanks for the reminder.

Hope you escaped carrot fly attack!! :-)

I managed to escape this year- just because I missed both hatching periods in May and Sept/Oct!
I sowed a few quick growing varieties in late june, and just pulled them up... all perfect!
The white green collared ones were over a foot long!!!
*Smug grin*
(well its the first successful carrot harvest I've ever had, so I'm gonna relish this feeling!!!! LOL

I grew in 18" raised beds and got the fly badly in one bed but not in the bed covered with debris netting. That's the way to go next year methinks!
Make sure you dig out all the infected carrots because the pupae over-winter in them and hatch out next spring raring to lay eggs. And they're already at the bed level even if you rotate........

20 odd quid from here:

http://www.gardening-naturally.com/acatalog/Enviromesh.html

It'll last years and has already done 2 seasons.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Good link DD - thanks.

Do you water through the mesh OK?  Do you remove at all once you have covered or does it stay on until harvesting?

I used enviromesh this year and its great, watering is not a problem and I have left it on throughout the season, My only fault was I didn't lift it to thin out enough because I was concerned about the fly getting in. But next year I will lift the mesh and thin in the evening when the fly is less active.

Enviromesh rocks for carrots.

I have also used enviromesh for several years with great success, the only trouble is the carrots don't get weeded because I'm scared of taking it off in case a fly sneaks in! Harvesting is also difficult when you're this paranoid  ::)

I don't water carrots. I let the roots grow downwards to look for it!

I'll lift it off for hoeing, but that's it.

Don't forget that carrot fly also attacks parsnips, so I grow them alongside under the same bit of mesh.
