As I type this I'm eating a salad from seeds sown four weeks ago, so I'd say worth it... I have a mixed leaves (from a Sutton's "Speedy Veg" packet), baby rainbow chard  and radishes...

Cheers,

Kosh

not at all...look at your seed packets, as a few don't like being sown at this time of year, but there are lots that don't mind at all :)

Try to sow in the cool of the evening and place somewhere out of direct sun while it's this hot.
Very hot temps stop lettuce from germinating :(

These are the speedy leaves, the others are standard seeds: http://bit.ly/n7XJ2Q

If you like more flavour in your leaves over winter, T&M do a really nice spicy mix. It grows really quickly and is cut-and-come-again. Don't sow too much at a time in warm weather though, it goes to seed quite quickly. Mind you, some of the seeds are really scrummy!

Salad leaves and radishes will work, in my experience. I planted some rocket the weekend before last and it's already germinated and about an inch high and the radishes I planted a week before that should be ready while I'm on holiday in a couple of weeks!!  ::)

And I'm a lot further north!

Usually I plant salad leaves every two weeks until they stop growing. And after the leaves start getting tough, I try to leave as many as possible to go to seed to collect the seeds for the following year, so even those seeds that I plant too late to get any crop don't cost anything...
