Growing turnips
« on: July 23, 2008, 13:14 »
I have very little space in my garden but would like to start growing some vegetables.

What about growing turnips ?  What is the latest I can sow ?  Any good varieites sources etc ?  Can I grow in a cheap container and if so what is a good source.  Can I grow between gooseberry bushes (I have very little space) ?

I am currently growing two varieties, snowball and golden ball.

The sowing season for snowball ends about now, but golden ball can be sown until mid-august.

I have made several successional sowings of each and hope to get a further 2 sowings in of golden ball.

The seed seem to germinate very quickly, especially snowball.

Slugs seem to really really love them which is a problem. I have a small patch where I grow the turnips but that patch has many beer traps which are constantly being topped up with slugs.

I have spaced my turnips about 4in apart and 12 in between rows. For a large turnip spacing them to about 6in may be better.
