Title: onion sets
Post by: rowlandwells on January 18, 2024, 16:45
I went to  our local garden centre today and I noticed they had some autumn onion sets left over from last year the variety was Senshyu that  we bought and planted in November 2023 to overwinter so could anyone tell me if this variety can be sowed in spring ? or would you recommend buying spring sets that they where waiting to come in

Hi,
Never done it but I'm told you can plant them now (Jan) in pots or cell trays & then transplant to outside in spring.
What you can't do is buy them now & then wait to put them directly in the soil later in the year, instead of the usual spring varieties. Not sure why, maybe they bolt? Sorry, can't remember but I'm sure I was told you can't!

Hope that helps.
