Coffee grounds
« on: June 14, 2015, 11:37 »
I struck up a deal with Sainsburys a few weeks ago whereby they will save all their grounds on Friday and Saturday to be picked up on Sunday morning, just collected the latest batch and couldn't believe the weight, 36Lb, they must have made some serious money over the weekend. I have 7 different compost projects going at the moment and every little helps--that's another super market, ha ha, but seriously though, that's better then landfill, cheers Dave
Today i will be mainly wearing no trousers

Still not as good as the mark up on Duracell batteries or any normal battery come to that. That's why Tandy used to give away giant torches and sold radio controlled cars because they made more on the batteries

Re coffee ground - I pick them up from Costa Coffee every couple of weeks.

I've been using my own coffee grounds for a few years in the compost along with tea bags and also spread it around the edge of my raised beads to deter slugs/snails.
But last week I put out an upturned dolce gusto espresso pod (a suggestion from a neighbour). Next morning it was swarming in small slugs, just like when you put out an upturned orange, lemon or grapefruit.
Thought they didn't like coffee?

love coffee grounds they smell far better than chicken maure. I just sprinkle them around or rake them into a new bed. My soil is so lacking in organic matter. I must go in search of more

Coffee grounds are great for acid loving plants. I have the best growth so far in 3 seasons on my rhododendrons  :)

Lettice they are not supposed to like coffee grounds

Yes I know, I've watched loads of youtube videos similar to those to try and prove the theory.
I was amazed Myself, I did wonder if they liked the shelter of the pod and just ignored the coffee grounds within it.
Perhaps like beer/yeast they are attracted by the caffeine, but will not cross it. Is it the sticky texture, like the eggshells they despise.
They may just have good taste :)
Anyway its a nice way to recycle tea leaves, coffee grounds and tea bags around the garden and the compost. It must help the soil improve.

29 Lb this morning.

What of slugs and snails?

I put another ten dolce gusto pods around the garden last night as heavy rain was expected early hours.
The rain did not disappoint and all but four of the pods were full of slugs.
Two of the no show pods, I emptied out, so no traces of coffee and one was a cappuccino milk pod. So they only did not like one pod full of spent coffee.
They were all alive too.
Its a fun game playing with them in the garden. Amazing how the rain brings them out, not seen many for a while.

Was talking with someone yesterday about coffee grounds and he was saying that you must not use too much as it has dramatic effects on the acidity.
This is not good for worms, they like a little but too much will kill them. This is known for those who breed worms, known as vermiculture, never knew that.
There is a way round this by thoroughly washing the grounds.
He was saying a good measure is a few cups of coffee used grounds per bucket of compost material, which I think is what most of us do.
The other thing is to mix coffee grounds with leafy material if using as a mulch as the coffee grounds dry out and form a crust, preventing water penetration.
So i think it sounds like throw in your daily coffee needs for the compost with your other daily matter and spread sparingly around the garden and you will be ok.
