had a look on the grit bag, it says - contains, insoluble hard grit and flints, also, soluble soft calcium grit. :)

Thanks Muntjac - bought some poultry grit and within the month eggs at last. I don't know if it's oestra c'os hubby bought it as a last ditched attempt. Do they need oestra as well as access to grit or just on or t'other?   Do you know anything about Welbar eggs and their colouring etc?

Chooks get two things from grit.

1. The insoluable grit they use like teeth in their gizard to grind up their food.

2. The crushed oyster shell (can also be called oestra) is digested by the chooks to use the calcium in it for their egg shells.  

If you buy Poultry Grit from the feed merchants it should contain both types.

i buy both as mine doesnt contain the shell .so check the pack , incidently cockle shell which is in some inferior  chicken poultry grit is not the soluble type as it is to hard where as oyster is soft calcium folks  :wink:
