Im wondering if you can hatch eggs from your flock during the winter months with any success? Is it considered less likely due to chickens being too cold to do the business? or is it more to do with the fact the cold will affect the fertility?

I currently have 5 eggs in an incubator that will be a light sussex and cuckoo maran cross they have been in the incubator for near to 10days so I am looking forward to candling them to find out if theres any signs of life.

Any pointers on this would be greatly appreciated

fertility rates are higher in the spring and summer. hatching in winter is not really ideal and far more expensive than in the spring.

Cheers for the reply Joyfull. But it is possible? We are doing it more for an experiment than a necessity so cost is not an issue.

yes it is possible and I know one of our members who breeds silkies and pekins usually has a few incubators on the go over Christmas ready for selling the chicks in March/April but I don't know what the hatch rate success is.
