Warrens
« on: December 01, 2009, 13:04 »
Hello, coop and chooks are due to arrive in 5 weeks, a week after we move and I am beside myself with excitment.  We have gone with a Scottish company that provide the whole shebang, and went to see the chickens the other day and they were beautiful looking birds!!  What have your experiences been of warrens??  Are they a friendly bunch??  We are getting four.  Roll on 9th of January!

Warrens are really friendly and confident birds. Mine are a real pleasure and they lay really well for the first 2 years. They will tail off after this but I'm sure by then you'll have the bug and have loads more breeds anyway  :tongue2: When I go out in the morning they all follow me rosey away and will hand feed. I think most people have the same experience with them so you'll have some very friendly happy birds when they arrive

Yes, they're great. Every one has its own character and they are very understanding of human failures. They are inquisitive and will join you on a workbench (just when you're doing something delicate) and have long complicated 'conversations'. Actually I've worked out several clear communications (?) - a good morning, a goodnight, a moan, a message to say that all the others have run away into the field and a complaint about being disturbed.
Have fun

I've quite a few breeds now, but warrens are my favourite

They follow me everywhere, , watch everything I do, lay more eggs than any of the others, even though they are getting on a bit now 8).

A great chicken to start off with.

we have a variety of breeds but the warrens are by far the cleverest.  They know all the tiny gaps to escape through, they are brave and hardy and lay well.  Goood choice!

Oh big congratulations,,,chickens (especially warrens) are fab, they are funny, clever, inquisitive...did i mention funny. IMHO, it dosent matter how bad your day has been , they always manage to raise a smile. Take the time you have to learna s much as you can about them, they can be complicated little creatures, but are sooo worth it. Welcome to the fab world of chucks :D

Can I also add that during this time you ring around you local vets to find one that will understand about treating chickens should anything go wrong.  :)

Once you get your girls you will wonder why you didn't get them sooner  :D
But please do remember we all want to see pictures of them  :)
