Title: Bean germination times?
Post by: Hawthorne on June 04, 2008, 22:38
Evening all - and here is my numpty question for the day. Do runner beans take longer to germinate than broad beans? I planted both about a week and a bit ago, and while the broad beans (and also peas) are showing themselves, my lovingly built runner beam frame is still naked.

Are they sulking 'cos I haven't muilt them a Munty frame to climb, or should I just be patient?

No to all, have a looky, they might have have been eaten, as common here.

Only joy is planting them out from something, already germinated and in leaf, that's our place, of course.

I know it may sound daft, but I have never planted beans straight into the ground.

How to start things off.....

1) Seed tray..as many as you need. You will need this because of watering.
2) Collect the cardboard centers out of toilet or kitchen towel rolls.

A normal toilet roll center you can cut into three...kitchen roll centers about 5 or six.

Fill each one with compost and a bean seed. Place in seed trays so that they are tight up against each other (incase one or two decide to unravel)

Water the seed tray as and when required. Either keep in a Greenhouse or any convenient window ledge.

When you have a reasonably strong plant...time to go into the soil. Plant the whole thing, with the toilet roll cardboard (that will rot away into the soil) The benefit of this is....You are planting something that has already started growing and there is no root checking because its not been transplanted.

This method also works a treat for carrots, radish, lettuce etc as none of these will check back by being planted out in that way as you are not disturbing the roots.

Hope this helps for next time.(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/sm001/thumbs-up.gif)

Thanks Gobs and Tweaky.

I think I'll start some off inside and hope I'm not too late for this year.

Of course, that probably guarantees that the other ones will spring into action immediately
